How to Get On and Off the Reformer Safely | Reformer Pilates Tips

One of the first things I teach my clients in Reformer Pilates is how to get on and off the machine safely. It may seem like a small detail, but proper technique helps improve balance, control, and confidence during your workout.

As a Pilates instructor, I pay attention not only to the exercises themselves, but also to how we move around and work with the equipment.

Getting on the Reformer

Before exercises such as Split or Skating, raise the arm on the same side as the leg that will step onto the Reformer first.

This simple action:

  • improves balance and stability
  • creates more space in the body
  • encourages better posture and alignment
  • helps you move with greater control

Always step first onto the stable platform of the Reformer, never directly onto the moving carriage. Once you are stable, carefully place the second foot onto the carriage.

Grip socks are strongly recommended, as they help prevent slipping and provide better traction throughout the workout.

Getting off the Reformer

To step down safely, raise the arm on the same side as the leg that is standing on the moving carriage.

Before stepping down, look underneath the raised arm and check the floor. Make sure there are no props, resistance bands, boxes, weights, or other accessories in your path.

Once you have confirmed that the area is clear, step down slowly and with control. Avoid rushing, even when transitioning between exercises.

Why These Details Matter

Many people focus only on the exercises, but safe transitions are an important part of every Pilates session. Small habits like raising the arm, checking your surroundings, and stepping onto the stable platform first can significantly improve safety and body awareness.

The goal is not only to perform the exercises correctly but also to move with confidence and control throughout the entire session.
